JEFF NATHANSON SIGNS ON TO WRITE THE 39 CLUES™ FOR DREAMWORKS STUDIOS AND SCHOLASTIC MEDIA

The Groundbreaking, Multi-Platform Property From Scholastic To Launch On September 9, 2008

Los Angeles, CA (September 2, 2008) -- Jeff Nathanson has signed on to write the screenplay for the first film installment of The 39 Clues™, it was announced today by Stacey Snider, Co-Chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios and Deborah Forte, President of Scholastic Media.

DreamWorks Studios recently acquired the movie rights from Scholastic Media to the highly anticipated multi-platform adventure series which Forte will produce and Steven Spielberg is eyeing to direct.

Nathanson once again joins Spielberg, having worked on three of the director’s films including writing the screenplays for “The Terminal” and “Catch Me If You Can,” for which he earned a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. Nathanson also contributed to the story for the recent worldwide blockbuster “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.” His other credits include the screenplays for “Rush Hour 2” and “Rush Hour 3,” “The Last Shot,” which he also directed, and “New York, I Love You,” which is scheduled for release next year.

“Jeff's writing brings characters to life with his great sense of adventure touched with humor and suspense, just the right recipe for our family film,” said Stacey Snider of DreamWorks.

“Jeff’s accomplishments as a screenwriter and storyteller combined with his enthusiasm for the project make him the ideal person to adapt The 39 Clues,” said Deborah Forte, producer.

Adam Goodman and Holly Bario are overseeing the project’s development at DreamWorks Studios. Nathanson is repped by CAA.

The 39 Clues centers around the Cahills—the most powerful family the world has ever known. The source of its power is a mystery that can only be unraveled by assembling 39 clues hidden around the world throughout history.

The hunt begins for The 39 Clues, an interactive multi-platform adventure series, on September 9, 2008. The first book, The Maze of Bones, written by #1 New York Times best-selling author Rick Riordan, will be released simultaneously in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The second book, One False Note, by Gordon Korman will be published on December 2, 2008. Additional authors and publication dates for subsequent titles will be announced at a later date. The official 39 Clues online game also will launch worldwide on September 9, 2008, on www.the39clues.com. Combining reading with online gaming and card collecting, this interactive series for ages 8-12 spans 10 adrenaline-charged books, hundreds of collectible game cards, and an online game that allows readers to play a part in the story and compete for prizes.

The 39 Clues website, www.the39clues.com, will allow kids to participate in the adventure by tracking their clues, managing their card collections, digging through the Cahill archives for secrets, and “traveling” the world to collect Cahill artifacts, interview characters, and hunt down the clues. Finding clues and earning points results in prizes—and those who solve all 39 clues will be able to compete for the grand prize.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUBS’ CLASSROOMSCARE TEACHES KIDS THE VALUE OF READING AND GIVING BACK -- TO THE CHARITIES OF THEIR CHOICE.

ClassroomsCare Now Includes Free Lesson Plans and Other Character Education Resources for Teachers

New York, NY (August 27, 2008) -- Each fall, millions of kids nationwide read their hearts out. Through the Scholastic Book Clubs’ ClassroomsCare program, participating classrooms are asked to read 100 books, and, in turn, Scholastic Book Clubs donates up to 1 million new books to kids in need. And this year, the program has gone to a whole new level.

For the first time, classrooms can choose where they would like Scholastic Book Clubs to donate books from a long list of charities on the ClassroomsCare Web site. The charities are affiliated with national literacy partners, including: First Book®, Reach Out and Read®, Save the Children®, Hello Friend, Pajama Program and One Heartland. Books will also be sent to schools and children on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, which covers the two poorest counties in the U.S.

“We’re so excited about the changes we’ve made to ClassroomsCare for the 2008-2009 school year,” said Judy Newman, President of Scholastic Book Clubs. “By giving teachers the ability to choose where books will be donated, we can touch so many children in so many horrific situations. Kids who have been abused and neglected, those who live in desperate poverty, and those who have been affected by HIV/AIDS and are fighting terminal illnesses. Unfortunately, the list is long. But what a rewarding experience for the children who participate to know that they are helping to get books into the hands of the kids that need them most.”

Another enhancement to the ClassroomsCare program is that it will now include downloadable, free lesson plans and activities to help teachers craft a character education curriculum aimed at empowering children to make a difference in their communities while teaching them the value of reading. These include:

• Read-alouds for younger students designed to teach “how the small can be mighty.”
• Suggestions for students on reaching out to local charities to make a difference in their communities.
• Free lesson plans designed to encourage students to write and reflect on what they’ve learned from their ClassroomsCare experience.

For 60 years, Scholastic Book Clubs, a division of Scholastic, the global children’s publishing, education and media company, have provided monthly catalogs offering top quality books and reading materials from all publishers to teachers in preschool through junior high. Scholastic Book Clubs reach over one million teachers each month, providing the most sought-after titles at affordable prices for children in classrooms nationwide. The award-winning ClassroomsCare campaign is available to teachers and classrooms through five of the Scholastic Book Clubs: Firefly® Book Club for preschoolers; SeeSaw® Book Club for kindergarten and grade 1; Lucky® Book Club for grades 2-3; Arrow® Book Club for grades 4-6; and TAB® Book Club for grades 7 and up. Since 2001, Scholastic Book Clubs has donated more than 8 million books through its ClassroomsCare program.

The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009!

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers invites creative teenagers to submit their best works of visual art and writing to The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards of 2009! Each year more than 100,000 works of art and writing are submitted to the regional programs of The Awards, including works made this past spring and this summer 2008.Updated guidelines and deadlines will be available on October 1, 2008, but it's not too early to think about preparing new works for submission.

To qualify, students must be entering grades 7 - 12 this fall. Artwork and writing created this past spring semester and this summer at home, in summer school, and summer arts programs may be eligible for submission to The Awards for this upcoming school year. Students graduating from high school in 2009 are highly encouraged to begin organizing a portfolio of eight works for scholarship consideration.
